E. Joseph McConnell — 1950–2011E.Joseph McConnell, 61, who owned and operated an international mail order topical stamp business in Monroe, New York, for more than 30 years, died on October 12, 2011. He was a member of the APS and American Topical Association. His widow, Barbara “Bimbi” McConnell, has indicated that she will continue the business.
McConnell was born June 22, 1950, and raised in North Attleboro, Massachusetts, where he played football, baseball, basketball and track, and began his love of sports. He was a dedicated Yankee and Giants fan, and was happiest being outdoors.
He graduated from the University of Massachusetts Amherst where he met his wife of 39 years, Bimbi, and began his teaching career. McConnell taught elementary school in Washingtonville for 25 years, as well as coaching high school football and his sons’ little league teams. He spent most of his free time between Monroe and Long Beach Island in New Jersey, golfing with friends, going to the beach and enjoying his family. His children and grandchildren were his pride and joy.
Besides his wife, McConnell is survived by his three sons, Shane, Patrick (Buff), and Odie; three grandchildren, Alexandra Maria, and John David; his parents, Everett and Dorothy; a sister, Eleanor; and a brother, David, in North Attleboro.
He was the son-in-law of the late Souren and Hertha Maria Serebrakian, who were in business as S. Serebrakian, Inc. until his death in 1990. The Serebrakians specialized in esoteric France and French colonies material of interest to specialized and topical collectors. Mrs. Serebrakian died in 2007.
